Im joining the Navy and I was wondering if any fellow surfers could tell me if we get to surf much...It may be the only thing that gets me through the next four years.

I was in the Coast Guard for 4 years (almost identical to Navy rules) and I think that you will be able to surf. If you are assigned to a ship, you will probably be able to take one surfboard with you. Once you get to your assignment you will be able to talk to people in charge of little cubby hole areas aboard ship where you can stuff a lightwieght item like that. I know other Coasties who did it, and if you are really lucky you could get duty in Hawaii!. Also, there are bases in Florida and California. It won't be the "only thing that will get you thru the next 4 years". Look, think positive, keep your mouth shut most of the time and your eyes and ears open! You will learn a lot. If you aspire to be a real waterman, you have to know that the Navy is the place to get paid for it. You will see places that you wouldn't believe! Try to land in the Pacific, and you will be paid to be in a surf locale. It's also a cliche (but TRUE) that " the service will make a man out of you".
Thanks for the reply

Thank you very much for your reply, and hopefully the Navy will take me, and furthermore, hopefully I will get duty in Hawaii, Brazil, Japan or Australlia. I don't know if there is any way to request being placed somewhere, but I would definitely request one of those places. So far, there has been one hang-up...I have a D.U.I. and my recruiter told me that I was currently in-eligible, but I am working on that...Thanks again...by the way, my name is Tim as well.

Brazil is out (no bases there) Japan (Okinawa) is possible. More likely is San Diego, Norfolk Va., or Florida. Look at the Army (I know, a LAST choice in this day and age, but they might take you even after a DUI. There is NO WAY the Coast Guard will) and you may get based in Hawaii.
