Help Me Plan My Surfing Safari

In August, I'm going to surf and camp along the California coast, mostly the southern coast. I'll be looking mostly for intermediate longboard beaches with good vibes. I'll be spending a few weeks.

If I find a place I really like, I might stay there a while.

First problem is that I'll probably have to make campsite reservations ahead of time, cutting down on my ability to be spontaneous. True? Do the campgrounds tend to be full even during the week in August?

Next, I'd love some good recommendations for campgrounds. They don't have to be right at a good surfing spot, as long as they'd be a good base camp (say 10-25 miles away). Three campgrounds I've noticed, for example, near Malibu are Pt. Mugu state park, Malibu Creek State Park, and Leo Carillo State Park.

Any other thoughts on how to organize this trip?

Thanks!

I suggest you check out this forum. Most of the members are longboarders in Socal.

I'm sure they will be very helpful. 8)

Emma Wood State Park is just west of Ventura... some good breaks around there. Mondos, Solimar, C-Street.

Try N. SD county. San Elijo. Very good waves. Mellow vibe. Plenty of marked spots to camp. Good luck.
