Me and some friends are looking to go to Hawaii for 6 weeks for surfing, none of use have ever surfed but we have longboarded and snowboarded if thats any use. We plan to backpack the whole and try and go to more than one island, but we want to avoid crowds as much as possible. Any advice on what island and surf spots to go to or how not to get robbed by crack heads.

Thanks

no crowds? backpacking? bigisland is your only option for no crowds. kauai isnt too bad though, but i havent been there for 10 years.. the big island is huge, and youll have a hard time finding surfboards, or transportation that will carry surfboards around the island...

you should all pitch in and rent a car. forget backpacking. and bring a tent to sleep it and drive from beach to beach with your boards on the roofrack.

Certain areas of kauai are getting more and more crowded, was there summer of 2005. I agree about renting a car, some will even buy a cheap car rather than rent for that length of time, then re-sell when you leave.
