My boyfriend and I are looking to go surfing somewhere this summer. we are based in the uk and can't really afford to make it as far as new zealand, oz or hawaii but would definitely consider somewhere like central america or south east asia. maybe even equador? we arent that experienced, we spent some time last summer in Bali but mostly stuck to kuta beach as we were told that everywhere else was really for the experts. has anyone got any ideas of a good place to go to for novice/intermediate surfers which wouldnt be too expensive to spend say 3 -4 weeks in?
Cheers!

Sri Lanka. (not sure about the season though)
SEA doesn't have a lot of surf other than the reefs of Indo and some unreliable spots elsewhere.
I'm assuming you want exotic? Otherwise, why not Europe? Morocco? Sth Africa?
I'd check the seasons and check the conditions that are likely before making any choices.

Summertime is not the best surfseason here at Encuentro (near Cabarete, Dominican Republic), but if you are not that experienced, this is no problem. There are waves every day from 1 - 2.5/3 meters during that time of the year. And the spot is beautiful and relaxed. Not crowded, nice people and no other tourists. Besides surfing there is a lot you can see and do in the surrounding and Cabarete is a great surfers town with many restaurants and bars and the beach.

Hi,

You have so many choices available for you this summer, why not try Morocco (it gets small to medium swell 5 out of 7 days in the summer) and you will have board shorts whilst surfing and an air temperature of 35 to 38C with nice offshore breezes. If not Morocco then try Fuerteventura, this offers you some really special waves at times.

Perhaps something a little further a field then the Maldives If you can psuh the budget out you will love the Maldives and have surf of 4 to 8ft regular. Another option would be South Africa or Bali of course.

Why not also look at Portugal. Or why not try Cape Verde!!!

Check this photo out of Cape Verde

Costa Rica would be okay. Warm water, various breaks for different levels of ability. Just watch out for the crocs. :) Actually, the Maldives would be a good choice as well.

Hi there,

I'm really a newby at surfing, but I just got back from Fuerteventura and took a course at the Cowabunga surf school. (also for more experienced surfers)

Fuerteventura is a great place to be...always warm and the Atlantic is great!

It may not be as far as you want to go, but very exotic all the same (Spain! great food and music) and the Atlantic is so blue overthere you will think you're in the Caribbeans 8)

It is the island closest to the African coast for a reason...

Greetz,
Cindy

I agree with Cindy.. Fuerteventura can get some really nice small waves during the summer. I believe it is the east coast that works well that time of year.

I´ve been there several times and each time had a fantastic time surfing and just chillin´out.

Good luck and let us know where you ended up going !
