Surfing Waves

So, I've decided to go to peru this coming winter. Anyone on this forum been there?

I will probalbly be there for two moths, renting a car for the first three weeks. Anyone know about the price for a 4x4 pr. week? In Panama I got pulled over 3-4 times a day, no biggies, but it is annoying. How is the situation i Peru?

I was also thinking about getting gear down there. Are there surfshops? Do i need a wet suit? If yes, how thick?

I was in peru about 3 weeks ago. I have one thing to say GO TO MANCORA.

365 day sunshine (i have heard) and glorious golden beaches, hot chicas, sand dunes, palm trees, beach bars, and a good point break. LOVELY

All you need is boardies, i was there in autumn and it was HOT. Perfect place with loads of board rentals.

If you want more of a challenge, just down the road is Cabo Blanco,...if you dont know about it look it up but its a world class break.

Seems like Manorca is the place to be huh? You said there are board rentals. I like to have my own board. Should I bring, or is the selction good there?

Seems like the North part would be best during January\ February, as the NW swells are most reliable, so having a rental car might be a waste. Someone told me the roads are pretty bad...

I'm leaving in about three weeks now, and I really need some info about the surfshops in Mancora. Selections and prices, please.

Just got back from Peru and Equador, after staying there for two months. Had a great time. The area is cheap, friendly and has some serious waves. The prices in those places vary a lot, tho. For instance in Huanchaco a local dish woluld cost 80p, while in Punta Hermosa it was 5 times the price. And that goes for everything.

As for Mancora, I loved the place for 2 hours a day. The rest of the day was just to crowded. I counted up to 35 people fighting for this one wave.I did, however have the cleanest big wave here:

I took this picture at 06.00 a.m, two people out. So we were three people surfing a worldclass wave for two hours. The wave had an average face about 2 meters, and some of the sets were even bigger. The word got around, and the next day some filmteam showed up. The fishermen are still talking about the waves, claiming some of the waves during the night were about four meters...

Also checked out a few spots in Equador. Montañita was great, but a bit pricy and crowded.

The surf south of Lima was even better in my opinion. Way less people, cheaper, but colder. I'd recommend a 3\2 fullsuit.

On place blew my mind. San Bartolo. From monday trough friday as was there pretty much for myself. Week-end crowds was a problem, but I just went to Lima for some partying.

This place was "perfect". You can walk out on a jetty, jump into the ocean, and after a one minute paddle, you are ready. You can even choose what wave you want. Go left for a left point brake, and right for a right break. You can also paddle 15-20 minutes out for a serious wave, but that needs a bit of swell to work.

A part from that I must mention Punta Hermosa. That's a serious wave. On a big day, it's a 20 minute paddle out to the wave, and positioning is pretty hard. But if you get a good one, you'll have the fastest ride. To bad it takes ages to get back. I surfed the wave there with a 6'2'', and I wouldn't recommend that to anyone else. Bring a gun/mini-gun. And make sure you eat breakfast before you go out :)

hey, this ist good information, i will go next month to peru for surfing!! your story gave me a good feeling, i was a little afraid about finding all the spots and how to get there...
anything more to say, particular for a girl, traveling alone + surfboard without car, only by bus and camiones???

Hi, I'd been in peru, I was there on march and I went to mancora and cusco, arequipa, lima.
I travel with totallyperu and I'm happy I take a tour to machu picchu and everything was great but I went by my own to mancora it is easy to find hotels and restaurants and it is absolutelly beautiful, if you are goind to machu picchu I definitely recommend you to travel with some tour because machu picchu it is so popular that if you go by your own maybe have some problems, well I think peru have rentacar.com or something like that I'm not sure I will ask a friend that I have there for more information.
