I'm leaving on sunday for a surf trip to the Central coast, NSW Aus.
Estimated Cost: fuel - $35, food - $150, booze - $45, Seeing my mate pearling in front of a beach full of bikini clad women: priceless.
Unexpected costs.... I'm expecting the unexpected... but, I usually spend more on fuel driving to far away beaches, and that's about it.

Surfing Trips can cost hardly anything to thousands, totally depending on what you want, a trip to a local spot or a major long haul luxurious package. Lots of surfer are now taking the expensive option rather than budget so much nowadays but thats just the market trend, you can still find some excellent and very reasonable budget options in guesthouses and places.
Just plan your trip carefully. I remember my first trip some 25 years ago and planning every meal and even every drink but I had a ball of a time surfing greta spots over three weeks. Nowadays I am lazy and just book a surf resort (lol lol lol).
Hope that helps dude.
Aloha,
PV

chris, it really depends on where you'd like to go. obviously heading to third world spots in indo and sri lanka would tend to be cheaper, but getting there may cost you a bit. the maldives is quite good too. however, not cheap. boat trip or land camp. pretty wild thread on magicseaweed and global surfers about a bunch of guys getting ripped on a boat trip to the maldives. the company is called tropicsurf.
