Surfing Waves

I am going to Lanzarote in July and wondered what peoples opinion if any of the possiblities for some body boarding for a relative beginner ( I have done some kayak surfing before, so not completely new concept to me)

I have heard it is good over there! I was thinking of buying one of the Sufster inflatable bodyboards and wondered what peoples opinion of them was and if you think it would be something worth doing?

ive never used any bodyboard much, but i imagine that an inflatable one would be pretty crap. get a cheap proper one.

i was after more advise/tips on lanzarote really lol but cheers for the advise

I have been surfing for many years now here in Tenerife, at first on a bodyboard. An inflatible board is a definate no!
There are lots of good spots in lanzarote but localism in some places can be gnarly so take care, try wavehunters.com for some info. July is not the greatest month for surf but if you are a beginner it should be sweet, look out for NE swells as they are best.

My girlfriend and I spent 10 days surfing in Lanzarote. As beginners/intermediates we signed up for lessons at Famara beach (Tim Jones runs the surf school). I would definitely recommend Famara for beginners as it is one of the few good beach breaks on the island - plenty of whitewater pushing through gives plenty of time on the wave. One of the days Tim took us round the island and showed us the only two other breaks on the island he said we should even consider: Playa de la Garita (small beach in Arrieta - NOT the reefs facing the town) and a tiny beach near Orzola (Stormrider might call it Playa de La Canteria).

As a body-boarder you might be more comfortable with the more challenging breaks. However, in terms of actually surfing, we tended to stick to Famara. We did watch plenty of great surfers (and a couple of bodyboarders from down under) at Punta de Mujeres and La Santa (at a break called 'The Slab' in Stormrider, 'The Left' amongst locals and (I think) 'the bone-yard' to Sean Pertwee/Catherine Z-J fans).

Anyway, really enjoyed Lanzarote and would definitely go back. Give me a shout if you have any questions.

I agree with the last message, went to Famara myself last October and had a fantastic time, one thing though, it does get a bit packed with all the surf schools and the locals at certain times, but otherwise well worth a trip. If you want more gnarly waves, follow the locals to the other side of the beach (off the beaten track, so beware of the potholes!!)

There are plenty of other breaks in Lanzarote, but for a beginner, go to Famara, definately. (if you go on Sunday, you can also include a trip to the local market at Teguise, just up the road!!!)
