Surfing Waves

Want to surf North Spain this summer - any tips/good breaks to look for?

also, dont have access to a car - anyone have any experience in Spain - wil it be easy to travel to places?

Dunno about north spain but I spent last year living in Mallorca, and the public transport there was first rate. Cheap as well. Really frequent buses, good ferry routes etc.

you cant compare mallorca to the rest of spain its like to different places. They might as well rename mallorca mini uk

Although i suspect the transport will be good in north spain. Still having a car will give you so much more freedom.

I'm guessing you've been to Shagalluf then... The rest of the island isn't like that, I moved all over the place, and there are towns where you can go for hours without hearing an english voice.

yeah, cantabria, pais vasco... im under 21 so cant hire a car...

I've done a lot of travelling in the North of Spain and I love it!!

Summer's not the best time to go for waves, but here's some spots that have been working in the summer on a small swell:

My favourite spot is Liencres and always had a wave when everywhere else was flat .There should be a regular bus leaving Santander...............yeah I just looked, and theres one every half an hour

There's a little beach break in Santander called El Sardinero which might be worth a try.

Somo is a ferry ride across the bay in Santander and gets the swell from the west.

Los Locos is in a town called Suances which is pretty easy to get to by public transport and there's also a break called la Concha in Suances

And the two places in the Pais Vasco (Bakio and Zarautz) are right in the middle of the town, so they'll be really crowded in the summer, but Bakio's a loveley place.

Another spot that I've found working in summer is Sopelana in Bilbao.......you should have no problem getting there by public transport cos its on the Metro, or there's a campsite nearby.

Another good campsite is in Mundaka........the views from the restaurant are amazing.

I've never seen Mundaka working, but I've always stayed in Mundaka and gone to the next break which is Bakio..........I dont know if theres a direct bus, but you mught have to change in Bermeo

You'll have to book Mundaka in advance cos it's always full in the summer.

Liencres was amazing everyday when I was there, offshore and fairly big. El Sardinero however was always flat and Somo was usually the same.
I know what you mean about Mundaka as well, it was quite hard to even imagine it breaking when I was there.

Bakio picks up a lot of swell but it was all close out when I was there. pricey place to be with lots of ugly buildings- looked kinda like the US. the san juan church near by is pretty incredible though . . . if you go that far cruise up to hossegor in france and rent a flat. if theres no waves there, there's not waves anywhere.

i defenitly agree with liencres , i was there a couple of times , and it's the best place to go where u still can't find as much people as in zarauz, in winter u have some really good breaks over laredo like el brusco, one of the best beack breaks of spain, u can check also in asturias where u can fnd also some good breaks close to Villa Viciosai hope tha u will have alot of fun , for transport there are many buses to get to other cities in the north , just go to the bus stations and u will find buses going to all directions

spain is really beautiful, lovely scenery in the seasonal months, never surfed. northern spain people are more hospitable especially on the coast. try northshore.com for information in the north.
