I should be coming into a bit of money in about six weeks, has anyone got any suggestions for a good place to go on a surfing vacation about this time of year?

Somewhere hot.
Somewhere friendly.
I'm going to need lessons as well, I was never very good, and I'm SERIOUSLY out of practice as well.

I live in the UK, my budget for the entire trip will be about £500. One week will do, two would be better.

I think there was a post about Tenerife where it says that it was inexpensive to get there, decent waves.

Cheap to get there it is, but if a beginner is looking for a friendly place, I wouldn't recommend him going there.

Nasty locals? or sharp reefs? or both?

Locals have a bad reputation, but they aren't that bad as long as your not a kook. They are, however, very good and they won't give away any waves. So a beginner isn't very likely to find Tenerife the ideal place to learn.

Also, it's a volcanic island, so the reef is sharp as ... well, reef. The bottom isn't that dangerous, but as the thread stared stated; he is out of shape. Being caught on the inside could easily kill you.
