Surfing Waves

has anyone ever surfed at woolacombe beach-north devon. this is my favourite surf spot and was just wondering if anyone else surfs there or has done in the past? i also surf at croyd just down the coast some times.

I have surfed there, but probably prefer Croyde myself.
I should think that there are an awful lot of surfers out there who have surfed at Woolacombe - it is a good spot.

i surfed there about 2 years ago... well, mostly bodyboarded, but i surfed for a bit. there was loads of little jellyfish frightening the hell outta me all the time (i didn't have a wetsuit on!) lol. are they still there, or was that just when i was there (of course)?

I have never seen these jellyfish. there were loads of what i found out to be called sailor somthings ?. little blue muscle type shells upside down which just floated in and got washed up on the beach.

eeeeeww, things like that freak me out. all the mingin stuff in the sea too, that gets dumped, it sucks.

I worked there for three years as a lifeguard on the beach (and at Croyde and Saunton). Woolacombe has a nice vibe and a nice easy mellow wave. Croyde is better though!

Although Croyde does suffer from crowding, so I don't really bother anymore.. I stick to the waves here in Wales where I'm usually the only one out. Yesterday I had 2-3 foot glassy waves all to myself for a few hours. A couple of mates were in for a little while with me, but other then them I didn't see a soul. :)

We are a bunch of Brummies that spend our working lifes arresting people, deporting people, selling things, engineering things etc. About 30 of us (boys and girls) head to wooly every year and have a great time. The people are friendly and the weather is a bit milder than up north. The only trouble is, none of us can stay up on a board for longer than 10 seconds. But it is the trying that counts, we don't mind looking like a set of t***s in wet suits as long as we have a laugh.

Its my home break and love it to bits except at ceritn times of the day in the summer when all the k00ks ghey up the place posing about.

You'll find me out in the line up after 4-5pm if theres swell eather at main beach or combesgate..

I live up north (near manchester) but go down for about 8 weeks a year and its great. I should be moving down there soon but house prices have gone up quite a bit so may be moving to georgham/knowle. I prefer combsgate beach. when I'm there I stay at sea-point house oposite barricane beach and I'm in the sea up until 7-9:00 when I get out and go to red barn for a drink.

The yearly jellyfish bloom.... usually happends in June/July you will get a week of thousands of jellyfish washing in, their all harmless mostly.

only has a few stray tenticals wrap around my hand and sting a little.

lol yeh that wudda been it then! we went with my school so it would have been end of june, start of july! hehe

There were a few jellyfish down at putts this weekend, so they must have been up at wooly too, its a bit early aint it? goes to show how early things are happening and how warm the waters getting.

It does seem a little early... i noticed a few over at Hells mouth at the weekend. Also the weaver fish are out and about... my mate got stung on Monday.

Woolacombe is one of my fav surfing spots locals are pretty friendly unlike croyde, but croyde does get a better wave

I'm off to woolacombe on saturday for two weeks. I have been too saunton sands a few times but never actually surfed there, anyone think its worth having ago or should I stick to woolacombe and combsgate and maybe croyde.

not surfed saunton yet but have heard it lacks real power but its a good longboarders wave

i will be heading there tommorow morning seeing as most other brakes are blown out so ill let you know how it is

I have just come back from a surfing trip to Woolacombe. We were there for a week and the surf there was good everyday apart from Friday when it was utter MUSH! Not nice. We had a good time though.

Saunton is a good beach, depending on what board youve got. I surfed there loads last summer with my minimal, but have only surfed it once this year with my shortie.
Be sure to find the local longboarders out, the long, crumbling waves are a favourite with them!

Yeah I surfed Wooly loads in term-time, good little break, usually pretty empty in comparison to Croyde. Only downer for me is that it's also the furthest from me, so I usually stick to the closer ones.
Never surfed Coombesgate though, meant to be pretty rad actually.

Have any of you guys ever surfed ''Oysters'' ?

:lol: im part of a kayak club and a few of us are coming to woolacombe for the august bank holiday - apparently the crowds are awful? how far is croyde from woolacombe? can some one suggest the best campsite? (ie closest to the beach with descent showers.

Probably circa 5 miles between Woolacombe and Croyde in terms of distance. In terms of time spent traveling between the two, it can be quicker to swim on summer weekends. The queues of traffic into the Wooly car parks can be horrendous. In Croyde, the closest campsite to the beach is "Surfer's Paradise". It has showers. Unfortunately you can't book though, so it is pot luck as to whether you get in or not ('not' being the most likely outcome if you are arriving after Friday lunchtime!!).
