Camping in Costa Rica

I am heading to CR around Christmas for 2 weeks and was wondering if it would be possible to camp out at all? I am going for a low budget trip, so anything I can do to save money, I will (and 35$+ a night adds up quick). Is it safe? Any other money saving ideas? How necesarry is it to rent a car?

Yup, back in the old US of A's. I am land locked though and its killing me. I've had to take up mountain biking, and let me tell you, the ground is a lot less forgiving than the white water.

Hows Thailland? I'd love to make it back out there. Cool country.

Thats too bad. Is there crime preventing it? Laws?

How much can I get by paying for a night close to the beach?

Not so much the crime I think. I was involved in xxxxx getting stolen from my camp twice, and that's in close to a hundred days of camping in Mal Pais.

Back in '99 pretty much everyone camped on the beach, but when I came back in '03 there was a few signs around saying that camping was illegal. I suspect this is a result of the pressure from the new people moving in. They really want you to stay at their places and eat their food.

They even built a mall in Mal Pais now. Skip the place, that's my advice.

Really? I've heard it wasn't that developed. Thats a damn shame. Where would you recommend going if I want to avoid crowds, prices, and would like to get a beautiful view? Witches Rock?

Yeah, i've surfed in Cali and Florida before. Florida sucks and Cali is good but overcrowded. I may be in San Diego for the summer, so I need to check out the waves there.

Ok, so tell me what you think. What if I rented an SUV and slept in it half time?

Sounds good to me! Wash in the ocean, sleep by the ocean.

I don't know on laws or safety there though.

It is crazy How fast they have developed there! I have lived nearby since the 90's. I still love it, but its not the place it used to be!

Yes.

You knew trouble was coming when they brought a freaking trapeze to the little place.
