I'm looking at taking a gap year in surfing,
trying to get a bit of info.

I'm not a great surfer and don't really want to go solo, anybody know any good tour opperators or companies?

Any advice would be much aprreciated

Cheers

I would do Bali! Pretty good all round surf. Might require going by yourself..but its really not that difficult in Bali!

How good are you at surfing?

i'm still learning really,

done a couple of weekends in cornwalll and really looking to go with a few people of a similar standard, that's why i thought going with a company might be better rather than going solo..?

Have you heard of Ticket to Ride??

I've just signed up, they take you travelling around South Africa, get you to Surf Instructor standard, as well as getting you involved in charity work. For 3 months!!!

I've just signed up, might be the type of thing you're interested in?

Going with a company

I disagree, if you can't surf already you could spend months trying to pick up the basics, and not make the most out of your time learning.

By going with a company you have experienced eyes improving your technique in its most crucial stage, and making sure you don't get into bad habbits.

I decided to go with Ticket to Ride because of the quality of their instructors, all big players in South Africa, 3 months of performance tuition.

Surely there's no better way to learn!!

I have to agree with Felix, before I knew how to surf I would just go to cornwall in the weekends or holidays to try it myself... took me ages to get anywhere... then a friend of mine suggested we´ld go on a holiday to the canaries... <removed ads>

I just looked at Ticket to ride. It does look like quite a good idea, but it'll cost well over £5000 for 3 months

I'll agree that if you're a complete begginner not too good a surfer, a few lessons wont go amiss, but for that money you could get a round the world ticket for a year and take lessons as and when you need them!!

All very useful indeed,

Cheers fellas,

I've been on the Ticket to Ride website too and it does look very interesting indeed. I now its a bit of money but then i suppose once you've shelled out for the round the world ticket and your surf lessons you're pretty much spending the same amount. Plus they go all over South Africa.

With Ticket to Ride the bonus is i'll be with a group of people the same level as me, so i won't be on my own and will hopefully meet some really cool people! Plus with them i would get do some community work as well which seems really worth while. And it looks as though they've some pretty amazing instructors. Springbok youth team coach and 2 former world champions?!

Got to be worth some serious consideration

Anyway, thanks guys, really useful information so far so any more would be much appreciated

Ahhhhhhhhhh got you now!!!!

Tim = Felix Warlord = Tim Conibear from the 'Ticket to ride' team!!

You could have at least changed your name!!

Good luck in getting those last 5 places filled, but at 5 grand a go it might be a bit difficult

I'm not knocking your outfit by the way 8)

I took a year between ugrad and medical school and worked in Taiwan. Basically all I need was surf and it was awesome. I dont really have any suggestions, but I definitely reccomend it.

I did a ttride trip back in Jan 2009. It is expensive but well worth the money and what you get for the price. I would recommend this to anyone wanting to surf on their Gap year.

AMAZING
