Car insurance often has '30 days Green Card Cover' ie european cover for up to 30 days a year, already on it. So check your insurance cover, or talk to the company. European cover isnt a problem.

And phone the AA/RAC/whoever and pay the extra for european recovery - especially as you're driving a crap car!

If you already have insurance, you should be covered for the minimum cover.........ie third party only in Europe, but if you're looking to buy insurance, Norwich Union direct are a good company and may include European breakdown.

If you've got a crappy car as you say, that's all you'll need (TP only), and I'd agree with Drowning and say get yourself some European breakdown cover. It's expensive, but worth it.

But they dont normally cover vehicles older than 10 years old (or something like that)

I've been down through France and Spain a million times, so if you need any more info, let me know just ask 8)

ins should be fine as already mentioned. when driving in europe remember they drive on the wrong side- roundabouts can be great fun, and they drive like absolute lunatics.

taking a car and camping is easy enough, theres loads of cheap campsites and places to pitch up, but if you can stretch to it i would really recommend getting a cheap van or hiring one. anything big enough to kip in, then you can pretty much stay wherever you like as long as theres a parking space.
