Americans surfing in Morocco??

Postby hartr72002 » Sat Oct 14, 2006 11:58 am

How safe is it for American surfers in Morocco? Has anyone from the USA been there lately or has anyone visiting there met any Americans in Morocco?

Thanks!!

Just go man and if anyone asks just say you're Irish, everyone loves the Irish.

Another tip if anyone gets on the subject is to state that you consider Bush to be a criminal. That will always go down well and leave you in high regard.

Anyway, I'm English and I'm off there in Jan, maybe see you out there?

Not American, I'm Irish, but ive been to Morocco a few times now and practically all the people i met were fairly dismissve of my nationality. Most don't even understand English never mind trying to work out my accent. I'd say a higher proportion of English dislike the Americans than Morrocans do, you have'nt really got a lot to worry about. There is a huge cultural difference though that they will expect you to respect.
Have fun if you do go, great surf!!!

Thanks for the info gents. I am meeting some of my English mates there for a week of surf and didn't have much info since its not a big destination for USA surfers. I always respect the local people and their culture but with all the anti-American sentiment I wanted to make sure I wasn't putting my life in danger.

I would find that hard to believe. When I visited Morroco in '87 I spent some time with a local crew who even back then were Anti-American and at the time pro Connell Gadafii.

I was always under the impression that Morroco was a hotbed for Fundamentalism. In any case when it comes to Islam there are few uninformed Muslims.

Fair enough but they were a smal minority. I think you will find on the whole they don't really care about your nationality. Even if I am wrong an American would be fine in Morocco. Their life definately won't be in danger.
