Can I hire a car in Morocco? I'm a female...

Hey, I'm going back to Morocco for the 3rd time this January and I want to hire a car but remembering back I can't ever recall having seen a woman driving. What with it being a muslim country and all I was wondering if we're allowed to drive or hire cars?

Anyone know?

I've booked a few weeks in Taghazouhte at the begining of Jan too!

From my research it looks like car hire is expensive. Re driving me and my girlfriend drove a combi out there back in the late 80's and she was fine driving out there. That was in the north though. We did get a few speeding tickets though for breaking the 20 miles an hour limit! TBH I'm sure that it was just a local cop making a few bob.

Seeing as you've been before could you offer any tips on;

How to get to Tag from the airport with board

And is it easy to sort out accomodation out there? any tips.

Just as a word of caution but Not paranoia !

Morroco is not the place it was .. the happy hippy vibe has started to dissapear .. i would check with your usual travel agents etc of any new social or legal laws/rules or unwritten policies on clothing and movements about the place .
Someone posted here a while back about his trip to Morrocco for a business opportunity that went sour and even sourer when he was warned that if he didnt wear a turban in most parts , he would likely get into some bother .

All that said as far as im aware it still is a cracking place to be but do be aware as you've already stated it is a Muslim region and as such will change social policies on foreigners according to developments of the middle east conflicts.

Just a word to the wise not a 'paranoia instilling' post

I may be being too skeptical, but personally, I wouldn't write to any of those guys.... I'd go see a trusted travel agent

I agree with el_timmo. Use a trusted agent because I found there to be a lot of fake (which unfortunately ruins it for the people that are legit) and 'too good to be true' deals flying around.

Also, i met a guy there who paid about 25 Euro a day for a little 2 door car (in agadir) so car hire aint too expensive.

well i personaly think that morocco is a very safe country not becose i'm moroccan but i have been quiet around and i can tell u that if u go with an organized agency u never can have a problem cose they are professionals this is fo people that are going for the first time i can tell utha once u spend 15 days here and get to know the culture
u will feel safer than home i don't say this cose i'm moroccan and cose i have a surf business , i agree that there no more hippie vibe in taghazout cose it was destroying young poeple by dugs and stuffs like that ( mean chimicals) but there is still a very good surf and a friendly ambiance in the water and out side the water so keep on riding and enjoy life politic is here to let u think more and act less

I just got back so here's a small updaate!

Leaving the airport grab a grand taxi outside and expect to pay about 300DH (about £19) to get you to Tarazhoute if thats where you're heading.

At Tarazhoute ask around and get yourself an apartment for between 150-250 DH. These apartments can usualy sleep about 4 so it can work out quite cheap when splitting the costs.

Local breaks include a nice begginers wave at Panarama's beach and Hash Beach. Further down the cost and walkable is Anchour Point which is an amazing wave.

There are number of good local surf shops who fix boards and will provide lessons if needed at around 100 DH per lesson. They also rent boards ans wetties although I'm not sure how much the charge.

There's about 8-10 cafes/restaurants serving up the usual Moroccan food and it relatively cheap or self cater in your apartment.

Tarazhoute looks a bit like a town out of the wild west but is dead safe and the locals are friendly.

I'm deinately going there again next winter!
