i just read the article about surf exploration in the June issue of CARVE, and was wondering, has any of you ever gone in search of surf spots? like unknown places? how do you go about organising a trip like that? must be so awesome , like sailing round the Indo islands searching for waves that have never been surfed before...

Hey Freaky, well i am one of the lucky ones who has actually managed to go and do a surfari exploration trip. I started off in Perth in WA and then I headed north with 10 other people who helped pay for the boat to rent, food etc. All you need is like-minded people who have a bit of money. The more people who go with you, the cheaper it is. We managed to go al the way down to Margaret River and surfed well known breaks like The Box and we also on our travels found loads of unkown/hard-to-access-by-land breaks. At the end of the trip, we ended up having explored the northern most parts of Oz on a boat where there really isn't anyone there!!!
I think the best way to start off doing things like that is to get yourself a visa, and then get to the start-off place either with mates or you base yourself there for a few weeks to work out the best deals and also to earn money and meet more people who are up for it. The best thing about this sort of thing is the fact that wherever the destination is, there are bound to be sooo many travelling surfers, students etc that will sooo be up for it too!!

Hope I helped!!
