how much of a beginner? Cos if you really wanted to improve, you'd be better sticking around your home break and learning there Id have thought

I agree 100% that if your a beginner, the last thing you wood want to do is surf any of the spots you mentioned.

I'm not sure what kind of break you might have, but theres nothing better than a nice sandy bottom to learn on.

CR,
Numerous beginner breaks and tons of surf schools.
If you dont mind staying within civilization then head to tamarindo for a couple days and link up with a surf school.
I have heard nothing but good things from the schools in CR around Tamarindo.
Mexico's pacific coast also offers a few schhols where numerous mello beach breaks are. Try the Costa Azul on the pacific coast. Its a little pricey for my taste but they offer really good packages for the individual and family.
Wherever you go your gonna enjoy it.
I know a few people that leardned to surf in CR then came back to Texas completely hooked. Even if it is your first time dont fret just get some proper instructions
