2 week surf trip, Mexico Vs Costa Rica

Around Christmas i'll have a two week vacation from this hell known as medschool. I want a surf trip but i am not sure where I should go. Since I am on a budget, i've heard Mexico is a good choice, but hows the access? I want decent waves that aren't too far from the airport and not to crowded. Which is better?

mexico is kinda expensive although the waves werent to bad was around puerto escondida and also ixtapa .

What do you mean by expensive? Like, how much to stay at the cheapest of cheap places that are close to the beach? Also, how was the access - how long did it take you to get to the breaks?

I know someone who has surfed all over the country(including Todos, Blacks, Windansea, whole bunch of cool places) , plus Hawaii, some European places, and he said that out of all of them, Costa Rica was by far the best. He said it was dirt cheap (around 3k for 2 weeks, eating like a king with another person, including airfare, lodging, etc)
Said the waves were fantastic, the food was amazing, and a whole bunch of other stuff positive about the trip.
