Canary Islands..Which one?

Hey there, I hope some old wizened surf traveller will be able to help me with some words of wisdom.

We are planning a holiday to the Canary's (second week of September) with the main priority being surfing. We consist of one who has never surfed, two who are beginners (ie they can stand, do some turns and fall off) and myself who we shall call an intermediate

We're not after huge surf, looking more for consistent waves, probably beach breaks more than point. Though we will be taking some lessons we don't want to go in for the whole surf camp thing. We shall be hiring a 4x4 so location isn't too much of a worry. We do want to stay in a town where there is some night life.

Can anyone suggest why we should go to Fuerteventura instead of Tenerife, or vice versa. Or should we head to another island like Lanzatotti?

Anyone got any tips on what we should being wearing in the water here? 3/2? Shorties? Flowery shorts? Nothing? I could look at the temperature online, but that really means nothing to me.

Cheers for any help!

I did a week in Fuertu last year at the begining of Sept and lucked out with the surf. You could see it was trying but everything was just crashing out.

There was a point break that the locals were pumping but it was a pretty gnarly paddle out. In the north there was beach I think in the town called Costello? that had a perfect begginers/ interm beach that looked that if it got going would be a lot of fun.

Nearer where I stayed in the main resort (sorry cant remeber the name) next to the point break was another beach I think it was called glass beach that also looked promising. The town i stayed in was fine ususal mix of restaurants and burger joints quite peacefull.

I didn't need a wetsuit just a rashie.

Enjoy.

Thanks intenso

Just need a rashie eh? Must be like surfing naked, I'm not sure if I could do that. I slamed by face into my board last night cos I was surfing for the first time this year without gloves on and had no grip!

A friend told me that Fuertu was quiet and very family orientated, that was one of the main reasons I was thinking it would be better going to Tenerife, though we're not after an 18 - 30 style holiday, (some of us are too old anyway).

I think you'll enjoy F especially if your outside the 18-30 bracket as I am!!

Regarding the rashie it was lovely to not to have to wear the wetsuuit but I did notice that I got a rash on my chest from the wax on the board rubbing. Nice to not have to kill yourself getting out of a wetsuit though!

Cheers for that.

We've finally decided that Lanzagroti is the place for us, (some technical things like package deal flights and time off work helped with the decision).

I'm hoping that if there is no surf Lanza would have more things to do than Fuerteventura as it is slightly more touristy, also so as I am only a young grom of 29 I still yearn for the nightlife that Lanza would offer. After all some of my school friends went 10 years ago and they had fun! Surely my tastes can't have changed that much! (actually I refused to go cos I was wanting to go back packing round "hip" places).

So any tips on Lanzarote would be cool!

Check this out

All,

Following reading the topics here on 7islandsurf, my girlfriend and I booked surf lessons with them whilst in FUE 2 weeks ago. I would just like to say that these guys have got their act together; they are professional, fun and really focused on teaching. I would recommend 7islandsurf school in FUE to anybody else who is visiting the FUE.
