Surfing Indonesia

I am planning a trip to Indo to surf. I'll be in Sumatra mostly. Anyone know of rad places to surf with cheap lodging on the beach next to the surfing?

Ah how I wish that I could get together the plans to go over to Bali and surf. I have been wanting to go there for an "extended" vacation for over a year and a half now. Unfortunately, I know it takes a LOT of money up front (Even though it's extremely cheap there), because unless you do something that 98% of Indonesians can't do, they almost never give work visas.

How is the surf in Bali anyhow? Is it like in Sumatra, etc?

If you're going to Sumatra, I spose it's gonna have to be Nias, just off Sumatra.

I think most of sumatra is blocked off by the Mentawais......boat trip :D :D

There is no freaking way you would catch me surfing those waves. Only because it's huge and I know that it's just sharp reef underthere!

Good lord! That is sexy as hell. haha. I just wish that I had the means to actually get to Bali for a while. :( Someone give me the scoop on how to get over there permanently without having $20k+ saved up. :D

This will be my first season surfing so yeah, I definitely don't think I'll be paddling out to anything like that :? But I definitely want to be there!

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh, I wish I could get to Indonesia. I would love to open up a little surf shop or a little bar on the beach or something and just spend the rest of my days loving where I'm at. I'm bored with the US and everything being so expensive.

Padang Padang doesnt get thet big that often!!

But when it does, it's worth going just for a look

And HiCarbon.......you really dont need that much money to live on in Indonesia.............If you lay off the beer, you could live quite nicely for $20 a day; thats your hotel included.

So, if you brought $5000 for the six months, that would give you enough money for a new board and the flights for your visa runs to Malaysia or Singapore.

I don't really drink a lot of beer so that wouldn't be a problem. But are you serious, $5000 would cover 6mo. of living over there?? Is that including a little bungalow near the beach somewhere and food? Or just the flights and board?

That's including a cheap hotel with breakfast, a good second hand board, and your flights to and from singapore a couple of times to renew your visa (if you fly air asia and book long enough in advance!!)
If you were staying 6 months you could probably rent a bungalow/ house and a cook it would be even cheaper.

That's not including your flights to Bali, cos I dont know everything 8)

That is awesome! That actually gives me reason to get a second job and try to get everything squared away so that I might be able to save up around $7-8k, get the bills I have here taken care of for the 6mo. I would be gone (Car payments, insurance, etc.) and then be able to go over there. The sucky part is I'd be going alone as my friends are all pansies and have no thirst for traveling unless it's to Malta. But I am definitely going to do what I can to do this. I knew it was cheap there, but I didn't realize it could be done that cheap.

As for a second hand board, that's fine, the board I have now (My first) is one I bought off of a guy. It's got dings in it and isn't nearly perfect, but it's beautiful to me as it's my first and all. and for airfare over there, I believe last time I checked, the cheapest I found was a round trip for I think it was $1800-2300. Knowing my luck though, I'd get over there and decide I did NOT want to come back. haha.

surfing shops in sumatra

Postby Salomonsson » Thu Jul 13, 2006 12:16 pm

hey guys...

first post soooo, not hoping this is a highjack of the thread but I have some questions!

A friend and I are going to Indonesia in a couple of days, currently staying on Phang Nan (Thailand).

We are beginners, we both have done some kitesurfing and skateboarding back home in denmark but now we wanna do the real thing!

The plan is Sumatra... we have enough time so no prob. there.... :)

Which islands would you choose, Mentawai ? Nias ?
and we need surfboards as well, prob. second hand... where can we buy this? any shops on the islands?? :?:

if you have some great advice for us please keep em' coming, and if you wanna join us you are all welcome, just bring some beers! :D
