Surfing Waves

Hi I'm heading away next year for around 11months on a round the world ticket, so I've 6 stops of my choice!

I want to keep it as cheap as possible, but willing to work in Oz for a few months also

Here's the agenda so far - 2 months - Indo, 5-6months - Oz, 1 month - New Zealand, 2 weeks -fiji, 2 weeks - tahiti, 1 month - mexico...then home.


I'd also love to goto Samoa aswell though?

I've been to Indonesia before so that's a definite but would love to hear advice on where to go in all the other places. I'm willing to spend a few weeks less here and a few more there...just looking for opinions.

Also, how expensive and crowded are Tahiti and Fiji?

I think that just about covers everything

The only problem with RTW tickets is that they can be pretty restrictive, but your itinerary seems OK......if you stick to it!

I wouldnt try to do too many places on one trip, but if it's your first trip, I suppose a RTW ticket is a cheaper way of travelling to many destinations. Then you can go back some other time to the places you've loved, and spend longer there.

I've posted on here somewhere else how easy it is to get trapped in somewhere like Sydney, hoping to make the money to carry on with your trip. I wouldnt just rely on 'I'll get a job in Oz to pay for the second half of my trip' cos it very rarely works like that .......

Unless you are very good at budgeting and disciplined

Thanks for the replies. I'll be leaving cold waters behind so would rather surf in warm consistent waves rather than cold ones! Being numb every winter is enough for me!!

I'm going to try and avoid Sydney altogether... unfortunately I'm not good at budgeting but working on it!

When your in Oz try Byron Bay, it is by far the best place in Australia, and before everyone starts posting back, i just mean the place not the surf.

But you can camp there, i was living off about $100 a week, and you can work for your accomodation in most of the hostels. If you have a car, you can pretty much always find a decent wave. but even without you can still surf most days in the bay itself. Hope that helps

New Zealand for a month:

Warm months are Nov - March.
But nice waves seem to turn up winter months. Same as everywhere

Best to stay in the north island and you'll hear a lot about spots called Raglan and Gisbourne. There's also an awesome spot called Shipwrech Bay.. Shippies, that sits at the bottom of Ninety Mile Beach near a place called Ahipara in Northland.

You'll find em when you look up surf spots for NZ. They are all easy to get to from Auckland 3-5 hours drive. You can go to these random van hire places where people who've been cruisin around NZ offload their van pretty cheap and you can go anywhere you want with your board in the back. Cool.

NZ is beautiful. Well worth your stay in every way.

Was unsure about NZ for awhile but it's sounding better by the minute!

$100 dollars in Byron a week sounds perfect too!

I've lived in Fiji and NZ.

Both have absolutely stunning beauty and it's pretty simple to go about finding your way to them.

Both places are friendly and I know NZ has a tonne of great surf spots up north. Like, all of those places are in close proximity to various breaks to suit the swell and conditions. You won't be flatlined when you get your transport sussed.

I'm in the south Island and there are even a tonne of good breaks here too if you have the time to know em and get to them.

Man! How hard have you had to work to get yourself a 11month surf trip? That actually sounds like heaven on earth!!! I am soo jealous!

I don't work hard enough at all, too busy surfing!

I'll be working my butt off for the next few months and saving solid but I plan on doing the trip very cheap! And will have to find some bit of work in Oz!
