best place to surf in SoCal for an amature?

sta monica beach is a good spot for beginners

I agree with Santa Monica/Bay St. Also, if you are starting from scratch dockweiler beach between imperial and MDR is good as there are rarely people to get in your way (or vice versa) and you can park for free on the road overlooking the beach. You'll get tired of it after awhile but for starting it's perfect.
