GOOD SPOTS TO SURF IN GEORGIA?!?!?!?!

Postby Surfergirl15 » Fri Mar 10, 2006 12:07 am

Anyone know of any good surf breaks on the Georgia coast? I've been to Cumberland Island and found it hard to transport a board there ( A JAM PACKED ferry ride is the ONLY way o get to the isalnd) and the break was horrible, even with offshore winds. The waves always seem to break like 2 feet off the shore, making it impossible to surf. The Georgia beaches are the closest to my where I live, so I MUST find a good breaking spot somewhere in GA. PLEASE respond if anyone knows of any good breaks.

MAHALO!!! :)

Thats about what it always looks like on the south Georgia coast, no matter what the wind is. I've heard theres a reef offshore about 20 miles that has something to do with why its always so small and choppy :?

I don't know that you're going to find a lot of good breaks in Georgia. You're set in from the surrounding states and with the broad continental shelf you've got the same kind of problem I do in Maryland.

Where in Georgia are you? Can you hit up breaks in So. Carolina (Charleston area, Folly Beach might be good) or maybe the Savannah area in Georgia or maybe the N. Florida area....
Sorry, probably not much help.

I'm in ATL at the moment and Savanah is the closest beach at 4 hours away. So you're telling me Georgia's surf pretty much always sucks? I'll have to try SC one day then. Thanks though!

You could try Tybee Island (HWY 80 E from Savannah) down towards the Jetty. Otherwise when you're down there ask around, there's probably something to surf that's just not as well known. I'm not really familiar with that area; this is just what I've heard/read.

suposively Tybee gets ok in a hurricane, but most of georgia is pretty crappy. the shelf extends really far, and that's why there owuld be a reat swell, but crappy waves, all choppy annd such.

that's also what happens in VA. well kinda. also the fact that the northeast, and the carolinas kinda suck up the swell...

anyways, SC is a better bet.

GOOD SPOTS TO SURF IN GEORGIA?!?!?!?!

Postby buckthis » Thu Mar 23, 2006 1:41 am

you are near atlanta, and there are a lot of wakeboard boats around atlanta, just tell these guys you want to ride their wakes, i know you could get hooked up. i am up in ohio and am going to start surfing behind my boat( as soon as i can find someone with a surfboard)

I was thinking the exact same thing the other day. I like close to lake lanier ( pretty big lake for GA ) and I always see rideable wake from the wakeboarding boats. I always thought I was nuts for thinking of the idea, thanks for replying!!

Red Top Mountain is a perfect destination almost year-round. Visitors can enjoy swimming, boating and fishing in the 12,000 acre lake, or can take to the trails for hiking or biking. In the colder months, the park offers themed activities on some weekends, like Harvest at the Homestead, or Christmas at the Cabin. Interesting near-by attractions include the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History, as well as the Etowah Indian Mounds State Historic Site.
