Surfing Taiwan

Just made a trip to the South of Taiwan. Gotta be some of the best beaches i've ever been on. The waves are beautiful and we only saw 2 other surfers the whole time we were there (I talked to a local who said there are a total of 10 surfers in the whole county).

It's in the South of Taiwan, the county is Taitung. There are a million beaches along the coast and tons of unbelievable breaks. If you ever make a trip here, drop me a line and i'll tell you where to go. It's pretty much unexplored surf since there are a total of 10 local surfers in the whole county.

Is there any season for surfin in taiwan? Also I heard some stuff that the water could be dirty..chowder in the lineup and all that?!?

Is there any good places to stay there..and boards to rent??

The best swells are winter swells but there are some nice waves during Typhoon season as well. Here are some videos from last year http://www.bluebirdboarding.com/taiwan_video.htm

As for the water quality, it depends on where you are surfing. Most people in Taiwan live around Taipei in the North of Taiwan, around here the waves aren't that great and the breaks are crowded and can be a bit dirty (there are also a lot of turds in the lineup). However, down on the east coast, the waves are better and there are almost no surfers. The water is super clean. There are plenty of places to stay (cost is usually about 9-10 US$ per night) but few surfshops and most of the shops that rent boards only rent foamies. If you are planning a surf trip here, it's better to bring your own board.

I saw some videos from a place called Fongbin (also spelled Fengbin) in the summer and the surf looked just as big as in this photo:



However, I know the Northside of the island goes flat during the summer (except for Typhoons).

Heya im an aussie gal come to live in Taiwan. this is a question for Grom. Im here in Taiwan, going to take a job either here in Taichung or Tainan. Just for the first year then try to live somewhere right on the beach. Just wondering where you took those photos. The ones that arent named, they are just img then some number. Looks pretty sick. Taichung and Tainan are both pretty flat when it comes to surfing. There really just isn't much surf on the west coast (though there is some).

Those photos were taking in Taitung, but it is really hard to find a job in Taitung...trust me I am looking for one right now. Huelian also has good surf, so I wouldn't write it off. If you have any questions or wanna surf sometime, drop me a message and i'll give you my number.

yeh cool mate will do. I think im gunna take this job in tainan.have a call de-wey, they have some jobs in elon. i wanted to go there and see if i could secure sumthin there but really need to start workin this week to get ARC rolling and cash in!tainan has a good trainstation and seems like it'd be easy enough to get to kenting and all over taiwan from there. for the first year here for me anyways just check it all out, find somewhere cool then go there next year. goodluck with the jobsearch buddy, are you a teacher?? ive heard not always a great wave but is a wicked chill out. Is is down the south?? what the town its near that ya should get a bus or train into?? I'd love to check it out.

Jici is in Huelian County, next to Fengbin on the coast. It's pretty but the surf is inconsistent.

Boards in Taiwan can get a bit spendy in Taiwan. What kind of board are you looking for? I have a 6'9 Aussie shaped board for sale (buying a spider board). I'll sell it 7000 NT$. You can also keep an eye on tealit.com for surfboards.

heya mate thanx for your reply. sounds good!!! accept im gunna have to wait till i get an apartment and crap sorted first before i even get the chance to think about getting a wave in let alond a board. Sound like you board will suit my husband grand. He wants to learn and i rekon he'll pull it off sweet (so your aussie shaped wont go to waste) i usually ride a short 5/9 shaping co. but wouldnt mind trying somthing bigger for the waves they got here (from what ive read) But at the same time if you find a buyer go on and sell it, as it may be a good while till i have the funds to be able to spend. Thanx so much anyway, youve been a grand ol help. and ill post a msg when im able to get out to hulein, we meet up out the back of a sweet set some day. cheers bud youra legend.

hey guys, just wondering if anyone is into kiteboarding??? id love to get into it as i like the idea of being able to carve up even if theres no waves and not having to sit in a line up. surfing always comes first but i dunno, kiteboarding looks really cool, i know the equipent is pricy but does anyone know what the situation and how pricy it is in taiwan??? i dont mind making a pay out to get the equipent as its like surfing, once you have all you need its free! accept i heard you have to pay to go to some beaches here. it really looks like the kinda sport surfers can relate to, i suppose if your good enough!!! so if anyone has any idea let me know, maybe then you and you know someone that can teach me and the other half!!! cheers lads

Hi, I will be making a trip down to Taiwan around the mid of september. Tried surfing a couple of times in Hawaii, can only consider myself as beginner. Was wondering which part of Taipei is good to surf decent waves? Would probably want a place with board rentals too. Don't think I will go to other parts of Taiwan, cuz as it seems they wont have board rentals there. Anyway, how much does it cost to rent a car? Other then driving, what is the fastest way to other parts of Taiwan?

Hi there,
I'm new to both surfing and Taiwan but am super stoked to learn how to ride. I was recently down in the south near Kending but the surf was so small that it was pretty much un-rideable (I did manage to catch a couple short waves on a mammoth board). A couple of friends and I are located in Taichung and we've been wondering about the surf in Da'an? I've heard that there is a small break there but we were wondering as well if you are able to rent boards there.
