If you had a month or so to focus on surfing in January/February as a lower intermediate where would you go? I'm not at a level where I'm looking to get barreled or anything, just want clean consistent (and preferably not super crowded) waves that I can use to progress. Being based in Australia, Indo seems like the obvious choice except for it being in the wet season. I think places like the ments will be too much for me and would like something a bit less crowded than lombok (although not against checking it out for a week or two if could travel elsewhere also).South coast Sri Lanka seems to be a good option for that time, how have people's experiences been on that coast? My budget would be somewhere between 4 and 6K AUD, and I'm not too fussed about much else besides being able to surf as much as possible

Quite good choice November to the start of April is the south Sri Lanka dry season and the NE winds provide some offshores the swells are smallish but look onthe maps to see where I am talking abou middigama Hiduwagama are the areas, sandy bottom supported by reefs water cleaner being the dry season, all the great curries you can eat.
Talk more as you think of things

Yes, definitely not Bali if you wanted consistent and improvement. Literally a crap shoot that time of year in all the unpleasant ways implied by the descriptive for West Coast, and I suspect you'd quickly become frustrated. Also suspect you're not keen on the more demanding spots on the East Coast given your level. Having been in this position and if I could do it again (and bringing my own equipment not being an issue) I'd lean toward Sri Lanka as Jaffa suggested.

So what now?
What Jaffa recommended.
Please read the end of my post again, where I literally wrote: "I'd lean toward Sri Lanka as Jaffa suggested."

Not to be confused with the oddly named break Sri Lanka in front of the Club Med in Nusa Dua.

Nosara / guillones in Costa Rica is perfect! Easy access, sand bottom, a break that catches swells from all directions. That time of the year is shoulder season and perfect intermediate waves. I was there last week of January this year and going back next year.

Thanks HK!! I wasn't enthralled by my limited time in Hermosa/Jaco years ago or sure about Tamarindo, but will give that location a closer look in the future.
