What up fellow surfers. I am going on vacation on Jan 28, 2006 to surf for only my fourth time at a resort by hapuna beach on the big island of Hawaii. I am twenty and have dreamed of becoming a good surfer my whole life. I realize it does take a while to learn and would love to get some tips on the surf locations where I should and shouldn't surf around that part of Hawaii and anything else that could be of some help. Thanks

Good surf up there, but with exception of Hawaikai (sp?) breakwater and maybe Mauna Kea Beach (next cove up from Hapuna) waters are dangerous in any kind of swell and for expert surfers only. If you are staying at Hapuna Beach you may see Hapuna Pt. breaking about a quarter mile off south end of beach. You can climb up cliff at the end of the beach and hike out to point for a great view, but don't even think about surfing there. Powerful waves, hydraulics, and jagged lava are the hazards. Mauna Kea Beach looks private but there is public access at the south end. Also, you can walk in from the Hapuna side. Hawaikai is end of the road north of Mauna Kea. There's a Hawaikai webcam somewhere. Going south towards Kona there are many spots but you'll need a local to find them. Good luck and have fun!
