Request about Tasmania

Postby jaffa1949 » Sun Jun 19, 2022 12:20 pm

Gday Jaffa,

a few of my mates and i are coming down to Tassie in a couple weeks to see how cold we can get whilst still enjoying the waves. As you appear to be an expert in the field we were wondering if youve got any tips on spots or just tips for surfing around the area, looking to hit murrawah before cutting back to the east coast and down to Hobart. all good if you dont want to impart your wisdom mate, seems like a pretty special place

Joe.

Here is answer Joe.

This year, this winter will be a pretty cold trip to test your internal heating, quite a few notches down the thermometer from Victoria and good old Sydney .
Murrawah being near the top of Tassie west coast will have all the winter swells rolling straight at it or going past on the way to Bells, there are :offshore days and big swell could be epic will be cold, offshore winds blow hard off the central highlands of Tasmania .
It is a popular area so there will be others to share the waves, southern end green point and beach breaks all the way north along the beach.
When you have had your fill of the west wild coast you do the east try around south Arm out of Hobart, Bicheno, or even a Brunie Island trip for the furthest south you can go surfing in Australia on an Island off Island . Ferries and across country driving to the spookiest surf spot.
Algae dyed red water almost blood stain with bull kelp rising like sharks fins in the wave face. Called Cloudy Bay.
HMMMM, I don’t know if there is better access to Shipsterns Bluff now but if you hear it is going off, make the trek at least to view (outside Jaffa league).
Lots there are tons of spots that will be working over winter, use apps to check wind and swell based in Hobart much available.
Credit for going the opposite way to the usual head north in winter trip.
Score well, Post photos

Yes it is good colder than rest of Oz, some epic breaks and less crowded. A few amazingly big slabby spots AKA Shipsterns, mega mad or megagonad influenced, acouple of spooky spots!
