Hello legends!
I'm a surfer from the uk living in madrid. I'm trying to think of somewhere to go surf for a month or two or three in the spring/summer.
I know nothing about surfing in spain but i would love to know of some places with great surf and enough of a town or city or local scene that i could meet people and have a good time there for a few months. I'm kinda thinking north spain.
can anyone help me with that??
thanks so much : )

The entire north coast of Spain from the French border right out to the furthest west and the around the corner has great surf spots covering all levels of skill!
There are some spots featured in the maps of the Surfing Waves site, you can also access as books or ebooks The Stormrider series on Spain or Portugal! They are worth the money, some of the spot like Mundaka you need to have an A class game.
What level are you?. Because some spots have no lifeguard facilities and challenging conditions and handling them could be dangerous! :D

Ok confident! Where have you surfed previously?
There is social life in and around Mundaka and San Sebastián, but I feel confident and capable are not the same in serious surf!
Mundaka is crowded and a seriously competitive wave for instance with strong currents and an intolerant crowd if you don‘t know your business!

Down the line barrels, as is Rodiles further west, depending where you learned to surf and how skilled you are now will determine you where you stand in the surfing food chain!
Why I ask for a better explanation of your skilll so I can suggest a suitable place.

Would you be comfortable at this level at Mundaka? 124guys out!
No mercy shown!

haha noo way fleshin' that! especially if 124 guys out!
No i've surfed all over cornwall and devon in the uk and some in nicaragua and el salvador. I only started about 4 years ago, not super talented but i've skateboarded all my life so i guess took to it semi quickly. Probably the biggest i've ever surfed is around double overhead but if that was a really punchy hollow wave i would be really scared.
the last time i was surfing regularly i was just starting trying to learn how to surf hollow barreling waves well.
But i guess i'm quite good at surfing stuff that's a bit above me, failing lots but sticking it out and getting there which i guess is why i'm saying confident because i'm up for the harder stuff because i improve quicker. but yeah thats a bit more detailed description so interested to see what you think : )
thanks for all this help btw!

There are a multitude of spots from the French border to San Sebastián , night life? don‘t know, Mundaka does have smaller days, but really look up Stormrider guides general Spanish surf guides , Somo is on easier beach and most of the bigger beaches have both surf schools camps and hostels, and some night life. The other guides are Lonely Planet or Rough Guide or I pick where I want to surf and Air BnB it!
Also depends on whether you have a car land / or camping gear.
Straight north to the coast!
