First of all, I'm incredibly jealous - I spent a year in Rio then ended up travelling for a month round Brazil. I only started learning to surf in the last few months i was there, so this advice might be a bit on the vague side, especially as i was only in Floripa for 4 days. Anyway...

As far as i know, surf varies quite a lot depending on where you are on the island. I was in Barra da Lagoa on the far west - nice curved bay, decent beach break between 1-2metres. Reckon it's perfect for beginners and still ok for more advanced, tho i did have trouble in the search for waves that would get my shortboard going properly (more a problem with technique than the waves as the swell was pretty consistent).

Not sure about other places on the island, but i know there's more gnarly stuff around if you want it.

Am currently in Uzbekistan - the only double land-locked country on the globe :(

Floripa!!!! That is my favourite place in all of Brazil. I was in Bara de Lagoa in Jan 2005. Surf in Lagoa was OK, but not the best. You will want to go to Praia du Mole or Joacina Beach for bigger and more consistant waves. The bus system in Floripa is pretty easy and very cheap. Barra de lagoa, Mole and Joacina are close to Lagoa (main town). Praia du Mole has the hottest girls man. Joacina can get pretty big. You'll be just in time for Carnival!! The entire island will be packed. People from all over the world go to Floripa for vacation. Lots of girls from Argentina and Urugay who love to practise conversing in English.

I'm going to Buzios July 2006.

Have fun man and don't forget your little portuguese dictionary.
