First of all, I'm incredibly jealous - I spent a year in Rio then ended up travelling for a month round Brazil. I only started learning to surf in the last few months i was there, so this advice might be a bit on the vague side, especially as i was only in Floripa for 4 days. Anyway...
As far as i know, surf varies quite a lot depending on where you are on the island. I was in Barra da Lagoa on the far west - nice curved bay, decent beach break between 1-2metres. Reckon it's perfect for beginners and still ok for more advanced, tho i did have trouble in the search for waves that would get my shortboard going properly (more a problem with technique than the waves as the swell was pretty consistent).
Not sure about other places on the island, but i know there's more gnarly stuff around if you want it.
Am currently in Uzbekistan - the only
double land-locked country on the globe
