looking for some surfing information

Postby Gabe00 » Thu Dec 17, 2020 6:14 pm

Hi everyone!
I'm a 21 year old guy from Italy and a few years ago I fell in love with surfing.
I would like to get any advice you might consider valuable. I would say I'm pretty new to the surfing world, even though last summer I managed to go to Sagres, Portugal, and surf there. Honestly I'm still trying to figure out what kind of websites or forums I could be using to get valuable information about surf trips, cheap ways to get around and stuff like that. For example if there is a website where to find posts about jobs and volunteering opportunites that would let me surf in exchange for the work. If you have any advice I would appreciate it a lot.
Thanks!!

Hi Gabe,a lot depends on how capable at surfing you are, a good way to go is to do a surf instructors course, then some of the language based surf schools offer internships or volunteer work in return for board at their camp! That field is very competitive and you need good people and communication skills.
Look to the Italian schools first, get a few times and you may be able to follow the surf season around!

Thanks man
Do you know if there are specific websistes I could refer to to get these kinds of opportunities? Like if there is a place on the internet where people post if they need help at their surfschool or something like that. If the covid thing gets better at all I want to go surf somewhere the next summer and I would like to that with a low budget so if i can be volonteering in exchange of a bed would be perfect

There are many ‘work exchange’ options, where you work part time in a hostel or for a small business in exchange for food and board. These may let you live somewhere cheap and then you surf on the side during your time off

I know one place near me (Australia so not an option for you) where you work for the person who owns a surf school, helping around the house and helping the school (not as a teacher but as receptionist, cleaning gear etc).

Hi, welcome to the surfing world mate! . I would also tell you to make sure you get the right board to start with as I made the mistake to start on a board that is way too short for me! It makes your learning curve much slower...
