Waikiki surfspot

Postby wongongv » Tue Jun 16, 2020 3:25 am

Hi!,
I'm a beginner who just learned how to stand up.

I bought a surfboard to start surfing more seriously.

But I'm having trouble with accessing beginner spot. I'm now around the Ilikai Hotel(Waikiki) without cars nor bikes.
I know there are Kaiser and Ala Moana etc but heard these spots are generally for locals and skilled surfers.

I used to surf in Canoe but I think it is too far away from around the Ilikai hotel.

Are there beginner spots around here?
Or is there anyways that I can get to Canoe without cars or bikes?
(FYI, I have BIKI bike access and my board is 8 ft long)

I was considering buy a bike rack and use it with bike share, BIKI, but just worried it got stolen during the times I surf.

Any advice would be appreciated!
Thank you!

Well maybe I am different but I used to walk from Dole street to Alamoana or Waikiki with surfboard back when I was at UH. There are numerous breaks but not sure which ones are good for beginners. If you don't mind toting your board for 10 minutes it's doable to go to Canoes
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

Yeah, maybe you are right. It is 1.4 miles away around 30 mins walk(by google map). But I think I can do this if I do it.
I'll try it tomorrow.

I also bought a sling which would definitely help.

Thank you for your answer!

On Google Maps search Ilikai Hotel and Mai Tai Catamaran. That should give you a better southern route, so you don't need to walk on Kalakaua ave. There is the "board walk", but it's too tight with a longer board.

Saves you some time at 18 minutes.

That’s the trick. Figuring out the route

You have to walk 1 mile with a longboard? That is insane. I complain and give up when I have to walk 10 minutes.

I learned passed waikiki on the way to diamond head. Paddled out by retaining wall. Good times. Just started returning to the water on the mainland.

Do you live in Hawaii or just visiting?

There's beginner friendly spots right next to bowls, which is literally right outside of your hotel.
If you're still active on the forum ill show you a map, just reply to my comment.

I'm in that area and just moved there. Would love to paddle out with someone!
