Surfing Waves

Oh, Hell Yeah! I just bought a ticket and booked a room in Kauai for 10 days in early April this year. This has been a lifelong dream and I am pumped. Dreaming every night about Na pali, the canyon hikes, and the surf.

I went back and read the forums; thanks for the good info! I wanted to throw up a little more specifics and see what everyone thought:

My home-break is Malibu 1st point. I've been surfing for 7 years and am pretty comfortable on my long board riding anything up to a couple feet overhead. I've ridden some double overhead days and been ok, but its a little out of my comfort zone. I can ride shorter boards and have a 6'10" that I'll take out when I'm feeling spry.

I don't need to get barreled and would love to find some long, mellow points to cruise on. I can handle more critical waves if I need to, but probably wouldn't be comfortable air-dropping over a shallow reef.

I also am used to crowds and know how to respect locals. Of course, I'd like to avoid crowds, but who doesn't?

I'm staying in Princeville, but will have a car and am looking forward to exploring the whole island.

Well there are a bunch of breaks in Hanalei and during March if it breaks might be good for you as it's kind of off season and might be breaking in some fashion that suits you. Hanalei is a reef break but it breaks like a point break and has relatively deeper water. The rest of the bay has lots of breaks that aren't as long but can be fun mostly sand breaks but the far side has another reef break that is perhaps more challenging. There is a break (reef) right down from Princeville called hideaways which can be fun. I used to surf all those breaks long ago so not sure how it is these days
