Surfing Waves

Where could I take my girlfriend for a cheap weekend surf holiday no too far from Exeter? We're both in uni and don't have much money- and also don't want to be travelling too far away. Any tips and recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Bear in mind we don't have a car and will need to hire boards/ wetsuits wherever we go.
