Surf in Seattle

Postby Abuelogordo » Wed Oct 30, 2019 8:57 am

Hi! I´m an entrepreneur from spain and i´m travelling to seattle the 18th of november. I´m travelling for getting contacts and presenting our projects (i have a team) to people. I´m staying there for a month. I love surf and i thing i´m not going to be able to endure all the month with out surfing, so i wonder if someone could tell me where to get a surfboard and a wetsuit and where to surf. I´ll also like to make some friends to surf with. Thank you so much! :please:

Your timing and State of Washington location will required a 5/4 wetsuit! Despite lots of water, Seattle does not offer much (good) surfing. You'll need to go west (a great distance) to find surf. While looking, here's a quick list of Seattle-ish locations. You will find endless seafood, though. Oh, and traffic is very bad in SEattle and within 50 miles of SEATAC. Pay attention to commute times and avoid them.

1. Long Beach, Wash.
2. Westport, Wash.
3. La Push, Wash.
4. Seaside, Ore.
5. Haystack Rock, Ore

People live and surf in these places, so don't expect to turn up and get set waves if you are only going to be around for a month. Some of these spots, although well known, aren't exactly aloha country. By all means go, but the locals at 2 and 4 on the list (especially 4) aren't going to appreciate new faces in the line up. Which is perfectly fair in my opinion.

I would stay away from both 2 and 4 on the list, these are localized spots, especially on better days. 4, stay away from the point if you want to avoid a punch in the face. The cove on the weekends is fine.

La Push is a mushburger, even at size, that's your best bet from Seattle if you want a windscreen free of wax. Make sure you have WA plates, and it isn't obvious that you are a surfer (no stickers, no roof rack). Break-ins are very common in the area. You will be parking on a reservation, so remember you will be tolerated, but aren't entirely welcome.

Long beach on smaller, clean, long period windswell, but the window for that is getting smaller.

the coast can get really big during winter, so I would suggest exploring the north side of the pacific peninsula in the inlet. I have had a few really fun days there.

But is it not cold for a surf on a Long Beach?

enichavi, ocean temperature in Long Beach in November is about 12C (54F). February is the low month at about 4C (39F). August is the hight at about 23C (73F). A greater concern with Long Beach is water pollution. There are shipping ports in Long Beachand San Pedro. Los Angeles is right there, as far as large cities and long standing industry are concerned. Even the air quality in Long Beach, San Pedro, and Los Angeles is not very good. I never go in the ocean between Long Beach and Los Angeles, except for a knee deep wade at Venice Beach.
