Sri Lanka June-July

Postby np96 » Fri Aug 09, 2019 2:04 am

Hi, long time browser first time poster. I'm looking at doing a trip to Sri Lanka June-July next year (the only time i have off). And just had a few questions.
Upon browsing it seems the east coast is preferable this time of year. It appears there's many right hand breaks on offer, but cant find much information on left handers. (I'd be traveling with a goofy foot who'd appreciate the odd left hander), are there many quality lefts around the east coast.
Additionally is the south coast an option for that time of year?
And being our first trip of the type, not knowing anyone who's done the Sri Lanka trip before, whats the best way to go about organizing. Through companies or independently? Would be looking at spending a month over there.

Can't comment on East Coast or conditions at that time of the year. I've surfed in Weligama area in February 2017. At that time, very cheap to eat and sleep (£180 for two people for two weeks' accommodation with two home- cooked meals a day with a local family). Surf relatively consistent and fair amount of breaks, for different abilities. We used tuk tuks to travel to and from surf breaks, which cost £1-3 one way. We organised everything independently, flew to Colombo and got a train to south, which took approx 3 hours, and cost £3 per person ! Since then I believe Sri Lanka has been developing fairly quickly, with heavy increase of chain hotels such as Marriott and so on, so I don't know what it is like now, but I always believe organising trips yourself cuts out the middle person, and therefore the cost, especially in Asia. Good luck and have an amazing time!

Thank you!
I would like to eventually surf south west also, however only have the june-july window next year,
It sounds like independently would be the way to go! Would it be worth to stay at a surf resort for a week or so, to get some local knowledge on breaks, tides ect.?
And i have read around Arugam bay can get quite crowded. Is this crowded relative to sri lankan standards, or say aus standards (when i think crowded i think say 50 people + on a point, or 20+ people on a peak)
