Surfing Waves

Hi all!

I am wondering if there is surf suburbs north/south of Sydney, with hostels/board rental around and waves for beginners (ideally in January)? I saw there are surf camps around but not sure whether it is worth it. If you guys have any low/mid price range surf camp, I'd love to know!

How far north how far south?
Are you driving? If so set up,your car for camping, but outside of camping ground police and rangers will move you on!
Most coastal,towns have camp,grounds often with rental,cabins, but it’s school,holidays , forget it! January school holidays , already overfilled even a tent space would be rare.
I imagine surf schools and hostels will be full too!

Try late February or March and be aware the same holiday crowds hit the beaches over Easter!
If you have a home beach stick to,it!

Hi Jaffa, thanks for your reply! Sadly I can't drive. So I am looking into places where public transport (train/coach) can reach. North - somewhere up to Newcastle/Central Coast? South - Wollongong. Totally forgotten about school holidays....

Newcastle has a train going almost to the beach and regular coach services as does the Entrance area on the Central,Coast, surf hostels, not that I know of!
Ulladulla has a Hostel not far from Mollymook , ( not a bad learning beach) and a couple of other beaches, coachable!
As for surf schools and board rental there are two schools that might help!
Pam Burridge surf school and Mollymook Surf School. Look them up and give both a ring , they might also suggest accommodation!
Pretty town but crowded over holidays!

Just had a browse around , there are surf schools in Newcastle, but they are not known to me! Accommodation , again challenging, and probably the same in Wollongong, maybe at Kiama!

Wollongong and Cronulla also have surf schools. I’ve done a surf weekend with Cronulla Surfing Academy and they were good. You can just head there as a day trip from Sydney if you wanted

As someone who frequents mollymook, jaffa is right that Pam Burridge is excellent but January is crowded as. Probably not the best option esp if you don’t have a car

There are a couple of places that run surf camp trips from Sydney including pick up and drop off in Sydney, all accom, lessons etc - Australian surf tours and surf camp Australia. I reckon one of these might be your best bet. No personal experience with them at all, but online reviews seem pretty good. They seem aimed mostly at international backpackers, but that is no reason not to use them (or an even better reason...)

Thanks guys! I will look into the options around Sydney, hopefully will get some good waves outside of Bondi!
