hi !!!
I plan to go to australia for a surf trip in december (5 weeks, gold coast from sydney to brisbane) with a friend and I'm wondering if it's worth it to buy a second hand van...
is anyone has an idea of the price ? and is it esay to sell it back before returning ?
one told me there is some places in sydney where you can buy cheap vans...is it true ? if yes, any address ?

Vans in Australia

Postby surf patrol » Tue Apr 13, 2004 5:31 am

Getting a van is a great way to do it. Kings Cross car market is a good place to pick up a van - loads of backpackers are selling them before they leave the country and you can find a bargain (people getting desperate to sell their van before their flight. Selling a van quickly can be down to luck in a short space of time - not sure where the best place to sell is in Brisbane but there wil definately be somewhere.

I bought my van in Brisban for $3000 drove it all the way around Australia and back to Sydney and sold it back to someone for $3000 (but it took me 5 days of sitting at that car swop in Kings Cross to sell it) and picked up mates along the way to split on gas. Great way to travel.

The only way to get to any good/uncrowded breaks is with a car/van/truck.

Oz trip

Postby Zeb » Fri Apr 16, 2004 12:53 pm

As you are not going bush just get a regular car, expect to pay up to 5000 oz dollars for a reasonable thing, lots of station wagons which you can sleep in at a push, watch out for rangers on the east coast, they don't like to find people parking overnight. As previously stated Kings Cross car market is the place to go but also look in the papers. You will also need a pink slip and maybe a green slip, I won't bother boring you with the details but it can cost extra, check out the lonely planet.

I did the trip, 1 year, around Oz 25000 kms, epic surf, great fishing, sold back my van for 500 more than I bought it for!
enjoy
