Hey! (My first post on here)

I would really like to give surfing a go again after I spent about 4 weeks surfing in Australia a couple of years ago. Only trouble is i'm just a bit better than a beginner but can't handle the gnarly stuff and everywhere I looks like one or the other.

Could any one suggest for me a good place in Portugal or anywhere else in Europe with hostel's in walking distance of good beaches?

My experience in Australia was in Yamba so unfortunately my standards are pretty high after that place! :D

Portugal, I would suggest Peniche or Ericeira. I've never been to the latter.

Sept-Oct, it's when the waves starts getting bigger. But in Peniche, there is breaks for all kind of levels. Food and accommodation is relatively cheap. I stayed at a place called surfcastle which really has the best location but it isn't cheap.

Blue Lion, that’s a good evaluation of your abilities, sadly after several years not surfing the fall back rate would put you back in the beginner category, but Yamba will have given you a good grounding.
The, Peniche area is your best option
There are lots of hostels and surf schools to choose from, google surf schools Peniche, Check their reviews off their Facebook pages and websites, maybe some of the Forumites can chime in!.
October is also inundated by pro surfers month with a WSL,CT competition on. Worth seeing but you will be over run.

I was there at supertubos when the WSL was on. I think it was it was 2015. I've never seen wave that size and shore dump like that. It was easily double overhead and there was young kids out there. They looked so happy that they jumped into the water without any fear in them.
