Oct surfing near Singapore?

Postby BaNZ » Tue Jul 17, 2018 1:53 pm

Hoping that there is a slim chance of going to Lombok for our honeymoon on the first week of Oct.

I know Uncle jaffa would probably recommend http://heavenontheplanet.com/. It sounds good for my none surfing fiancee. She can go to spa and yoga while I get hammered by the swells.

I don't know anything about surfing in Indonesia. All I gathered from my friends who has been there is that it is when the surfing season starts, you will really drown out there. Plus there are monsoon seasons where the ocean is filled with trash. From what I heard, they say Lombok is nice, safe, less crowded. Another tip from them is that you will need to hire a surf guide to help you get on the waves or the locals will never let you catch anything.

Do Big H or Uncle Jaffa have spots that you would recommend for a longboard? Just easy waves and no bigger than overhead.

BaNZ! There are a couple of it depends.

HOTP most times will fit your Wave criteria, the lefts at Inside Ekas are fairly suitable for longboards the Rights ( It's an A Frame ) The break is full on Reef and you DO NEED TO BE SAFETY SELF SUFFICIENT!
At high tide you can boat out and when done paddle in.

There is a very small but nice sandy beach break great for learning, but not reliable.
Outside EKas not in my league now, a Hawaiian level of power and water movement.

The wave is not as uncrowned as it used to be, boat charters and world traveling yachts sometime Moor for a couple of days, some boats come for a day trip from Awang across the bay with learners of the clueless level.
There is also another Surf Stay in the nearby town (HOTP is directly above Inside EKAS) .
But you can still get waves to yourself, October may be quieter in that regard and swell slightly smaller!
HOTP also has a reasonable selection of boards available.

How to get there. Fly to Bali, then to Lombok or it may be possible to fly direct to Lombok international Airport???
from Singapore HOTP have an airport transfer as part of their deals, 2 hour or slightly more bumpy drive
Possible down sides for your partner, only basic shopping, spa and yoga quite good, lots of sitting by the pool or sea bathing at the bottom of the cliffs , read up on the room you might select, some are basic through to very nice.
Food good and included, there are local crafts people coming with permission to the resort.

Back west on Lombok there is another easy surf bay, Gerupuk! I don't know the accommodation levels there but again not much to do other than surf and sun, you might check it out but I think a little more basic and no spas.

That pretty much covers it and couples I know have gone back a number of times to HOTP so it might suit.
Not the Zoo of Bali :D

As Dana said, we are in our prime and we won't have much more time of carefree life. But I've been telling her, we are way past our prime. It's all downhill from 28 onwards!

Plus you have had a much more interesting 30-40's compared to us!

@jaffa, thanks for the tip. The names and surf spot of these places will give me something to do research into!

Why is it such an uphill battle when you are on the downhill slope of life!

Death is nature’s way of telling you to slow down!

Sent you a message BanZ.....October still has rocking swells and most breaks on most days will likely be out of your comfort zone.....Batu bolong is a long boarding mecca and is swamped, especially on days that you would feel comfortable as the hordes of beginner intermediates wait for those days as well.....Medewi is off the beaten path in the north but offers a relatively gentle if rocky break that is longboard friendly......Toro Toro on bigger days by the airport would be a go as well....reef break and well offshore, you'd have to hire a boat and you would need to make sure your paddle is up to it since the boat will possibly piss off for an hour or so then come back to check on you......tourist got swept out to sea from there and they found him 14hours later in shipping lanes 3km offshore not too long ago. Issue in Bali with shoulder to head high more gentle days is that there are literally hundreds if not thousands of would be surfers who have taken 2-6-8 months off of life to learn to surf.....on smaller, weaker swells they come out of the woodwork like drop-in ants and ruin more than one spot.

A man of means can do well here to hire a "guide" who will get you into waves by blocking or otherwise intimidating those in their immediate area into allowing you to get more than your fair share.....not a practice I like to see but is the way it is here so if you have 100bucks a day to spend on that, you'll get taken to waves within your ability and will get all you can eat.

$100 a session/day? Wow they sure make a lot of money. But just think about it as they are surf instructors. Making sure you're safe in the water! I've never done it but I wouldn't mind trying. I don't like going to spots where it is reef bottom by myself and not knowing how deep the water is. Sure you can probably jump off the board and see if you can touch the bottom, but it would still be nice to have someone hold your hands for the first time you go to a spot.

They push beginners in waves that has other surfers already up and riding, that is dangerous for everybody.

That and you paying is about the extent of it for a lot of surf instructors, + buy the happy snaps.
Beyond Kuta you are very much on your own in regard to surf safety. Most rescues are by other capable surfers.
Grim news but true!
