Eating out price on the north shore of Oahu in April?

Postby Soulmancer » Tue Mar 20, 2018 11:10 pm

I can get a cheap flight, cheap car rental and will likely camp and stay with a friend for a a decent portion of the trip... but seeing as I'd be coming from Canada and our dollar is pretty weak right now I'm concerned that I'd be absolutely savaged by the price of restaurants, cafes and eateries.

Is that a legit concern?

Soulmancer, you'll do all right. Do what I do when I travel. Look for the locals' eateries, Mom & Pop shops, and grocery stores. billie

There are lots of places to eat, they have Macdonalds and local fast food laces that aren't too bad. If you are camping cook your own food. Yelp can help you like this search https://www.yelp.com/search?find_desc=Cheap+Eats&find_loc=Haleiwa%2C+HI+96712 The local 7 Eleven stores have good cheap local food
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

Mostly surf.

I think now I'm more worried about north shore traffic than the price from food. From what I hear and read it's a zoo.

It can be real bad in the winter when everyone comes for the big surf but April? Not too sure. It's been a while since I was at the northshore in April.

These waves make me want to go to Hawaii.

I'm wowed by those Maui waves. They look like so much fun. Would the locals throw me into a volcano if I tried to paddle out there?

Honolua bay is one of those highly controlled breaks or so I hear. You have to work your way through the lineup, pay your dues by time spent in the lineup or you will pay for it one way or another. Don't think you need to worry about getting tossed in a volcano but maybe have your fins broken off or car tires flattened or something.

Yeah, I figured as much. I'm lucky in the sense that I don't really need to travel for waves. There are more than enough amazing waves around here, but it's fun to fantasize.

You do know that there’s no waves on the Northshore in April. ( well, they just had a freak 15 foot swell this week, must be global warming, so who knows )

But google told me the northshore surf season is Nov-April... it lies!?

It's also a La Nina winter if that's a factor but it's been very storm in the PNW and that doesn't look like that'll be changing soon.

You believe google about surf, hmmm “Houston we have a problem” the whole North Shore trip is based on Northern Hemisphere swells from the Aleutian storm systems making their way to the north shore peak time December January, sliding off to shoulder seasons either side.

Memo don’t rely on google about surf!
