Aussie in California advice please.

Postby JimmySpitfire » Tue Feb 20, 2018 5:25 am

Hi guys, Ive been surfing the net for where to go for a couple of weeks in Southern California from early Jan 2019. Its become a mind F#*K so I am asking your help for a area / air bnb rental /tips where to stay for this time and anything you could recomend. I will have a rental car but would like to be close to a break...... Intermediate surfer and grommet son with wife and 15 year old daughter.
I have entertained a mexico trip for a few days but my wife thinks its too dangerous etc etc...I dont.

Hope some one can help!

Simple, if you want warmer weather than colder then San Diego or Orange county, anything north of LA will be colder than around here.

As to places that have a beach where you could get an air bnb it depends on the price, but here are my places where I would take a wife and kids, starting south to north, and leaving out extra expensive places. This, however, based on surfing trips, so might miss some stuff north of Los Angeles

San Diego: Mission Beach, Pacific Beach, Del Mar, Solana Beach, Encinitas
Orange Couty: Newport Beach, Huntington Beach

If you don't mind wetsuits for everyone:

Santa Barbara
Morro Bay

Sorry, always did hotels, so no air BNB suggestions for you

I don't live in Southern California, but I grew up there. I think your question is really dependent on what kind of trip you're on. Is it a surfing trip? Business trip? How long will you be in California? What's your budget like? If you're just looking for ideas on where to surf, I imagine hitting all the classic breaks from Santa Barbara down to Trestles would be a nice trip down surfing history lane. Basically go to the breaks you hear in Beach Boys songs: Malibu, Rincon, Huntington Beach, Newport jetties, Doheny, San Onofre, Trestles, Bolsa Chica (my first beach), etc. California has such a rich surfing history I think it would be cool to go to some of its iconic spots, especially if you're on a trip you'll probably never repeat. I have no doubt you'll probably find some decent waves at any of those spots.
