Ideas for a budget surf trip in January-February

I am taking a gap year to surf and am looking for reasonably cheap places to live for a week or two each, with good and consistent waves being the most important thing. I am (advanced) intermediate but would like to experiment with bigger and hollower waves. I'm not worried about cold water or bad weather, however I don't have my drivers and therefore would either need somewhere I could stay within walking distance of the surf and shops (for <$50/night), or somewhere that offers cheap transport to and from the surf. Places near (or in!) Indonesia would be perfect as I will be starting my trip from there (starting late Jan or early Feb).

Thanks for any ideas

If you’re in Indo already why go somewhere else?

Do you have any idea how challenging it is to travel in Indonesia, Island hopping flights or ferries and then getting to a surf locality.
There is more than enough on offer for you there ,! Where were you going to be in the first place and we can then offer suggestions there is certainly lots available in your price range. A suggestion buy , Peter Neely‘s Indo Lingo and Surf Guide Book, it will help a lot.

Going beyond Indonesia is even more challenging and throw good money away chasing international flights.

Nearest next real surf destinations = Maldives, Philippines or SriLanka and India.

A good thing if you are at the level you believe, getting well barrelled shouldn’t be a problem in Indo.

I guess there is Fiji and Tahiti - not cheap

If in Bali you could hop over to Western Australia, places like Margaret River etc. However, without a car it might be a bit hard to get around.

Indonesia where? It is a big f-ing county with a lot of shoreline innit?

I live here in Bali....surfing sucks this time of year....best breaks are onshore and buried in garbage. Other breaks you better have skills and fitness as you are a long way from shore and in the currents. Windoff the Indian is the same from here to Sumatra. Better gap your year 4 months from now around here.
