Swell Surf Camp in Cabarete, DR

I did it, I booked my first week-long surf trip today! I couldn't be more psyched!! I was looking into Bali, Costa Rica, etc. but they're just too far for me in terms of the time I can get off work. DR from NYC is just 3.5 hours away and relatively cheap direct flights.

I hope I made the right choice, but the camp looks like a pretty good one and I'm going 12/19-12/26 which looks decent.

If anyone has ever surfed DR and has some tips/tricks, please let me know.

thanks!

Rach! I was just booking my surf trip to Cabarete as well! haha. Definitely let me know how it is. My plan is to go in Jan/Feb. Make sure you take plenty of photos. From my research, you need to go at dawn patrol. Their have strong winds later the day as it's a popular spot for kite surfing. I also read that you need to watch what you eat. The food/water is not very hygienic so make sure you drink bottle water from a reliable place. It's also not so safe at the beach at night, but I think it's probably talking about punta cana on the east coast where all the tourists go.

Jaffa, we should convince Bill to go DR so we can all have a surfing-waves surf meet up there!

Awesome!! You know your perfectionist seal of approval means a lot to me haha! Are you also looking at Swell? I’ll definitely send/post pics. They sent me this whole long email with a bunch of tips that all touched upon what you mention. First session is 7am sharp, then breakfast, then out again before the wind picks up around 1pm. I’m going with my buddy and he’s into kite surfing so he’ll probably bring his gear.

Have fun. Take some Deet and avoid the mosquitoes if you can. You don't want to pick up the Zika virus.
