Surfing Waves

Hi all, first post here, sorry if I'm doing anythring wrong, let me know gently .

Planning on visiting Portugal or Spain or France this january for 10-12 days of surfing. We're intermediate shortboarders looking for fun, but preferrably slightly gentle (no supertubos) waves. Since the winter swell is on it would be great to have a few spots close to each other where at least one have a bit of shelter should the swell get really heavy. We will probably rent a car, so we're mobile, but prefer surfing to driving . Any areas in the countries mentioned that could fit in that category? Thanks for any advice!

Now I'm not much of a shortboarder myself but my parents have a place down in the Algarve (south coast portugal) and I can tell you that this area would be xxxxx for a shortboarder of intermediate level. Waves are seriously small like they don't get bigger than 8ft most of the time but they are serious fun. If u want proper good quality waves there are plenty of spots on the south west coast which offer perfect, medium sized waves. I've been here for 3 days now and I've been out today at a break called castelejo (still in the Algarve but on the west coast so receives a nice amount of swell) and it was a decent 8-10ft today it say. Perfect waves for any board if you know what you're doing. Sure I got a few weird looks from the dudes cos I'm on my log but I've ridden bigger so I'm confident. What I'm saying is that if ur confident in ur skills then u can just turn up to any break on the west coast of Europe and have a blast. Especially if it coming in January u lucky bugger have fun out there dude. Hang loose my brother. PEACE X

Aren"t 8-10 inches something like 20-25cm? If yes, then of course it's small.

But that's not my question. I was talking with one of my uncles the other day, and he was thinking of renting one of these houses tranio.com/rent/spain/valencia/alicante/this summer, and offered me to come along with my fiancée. Of course I agreed - who wouldn't? - but I was wondering: are there places to learn how to surf near Alicante that you'd recommend? I'm a total newbie and would like to find a good school. Plus the Mediterranean doesn't have waves as big as in the Atlantic Ocean, so I figured it would be easier and safer to begin there.
