Surfing Waves

My husband and I were hoping to find a surf guide for the time we are in oahu and kauai island in January. We can both surf up to 2-3 foot waves independently having surfed in australia for about 1 year. We are looking for someone to surf with in the morning and take us to less crowded beaches and help with wave choice and positioning rather than lessons per se. Does anyone offer services like this?

I don't know the answer to that question but I can give you links to go and ask on Kauai. I assume there will be a variety of similar things offered by some of them.

In Hawaii, there's a reason why in uncrowded.
1) too Big or to Manini ( small ) to ride
2) too hard reef to wipeout on and get out/in
3) it's uncrowded because you're Un-wanted. Locals only.

By the way,
1) what size / type of board you normally use ?
2) January is mainly Northshore waves. But usually there's something catchable in Waikiki, especially if you max is 2-3 feet ( 1-1.5 Hawaiian scale ) and it will be crowded, but that's fun.

Thank you. I ride a 7 foot mal. Was more wondering whether having a guide in crowded areas will be helpful then as I wonder if I'll ever get a chance for a wave considering my skill level and experience

On your 7 foot Mal, are you able to bottom turn and trim across the face front side AND backside ?

So you're hoping since you know ( paying off ) someone local that it'll be okay to drop in going straight as others are barreling down the line ? Or you're hoping they can give you a heads up to not go, so you don't get into trouble. ( basically if you're a shoulder hopper, you're never going ) No matter what, safety is still a factor, if you send a board into someone's little kid, there's nothing that that local will be able to do. Go where the beginners are of likewise skill as yourselves. You're not ready for the Northshore ( unless you're with the kids inside Haleiwa, Diamond head and Pops, you'll probably wont survive the paddle out distance, Bowls / Rock piles is closer but you'll get cut up.

haha thanks. I guess you're right. In that case, surf guide won't be useful if i just stick to the beginner breaks. Are the beginner breaks in Hawaii also really competitive with not-so-beginners thus hard to catch a wave? I guess ill just have to suss it out when I get there. Im getting the vibe I won't benefit much from paying for a guide

I think you're more looking at the "guides" like they have in Bali. Where they take you out in a boat to a private point. Not going to work in Hawaii. I can point out some good instructors that can be with you out in the main line up and set you up WHERE to be and WHEN to go. Then after that hour is up, you can fend for yourself.
If you surf 6-7am in the mornings, you'll be fine. And sunset surfs are great, the rental stand start closing up around 5-6pm.

One of the links I provided had a "Rent a local" $25/hour. That might be what you want. Some do surf adventure trips for a fee that might be what you want. But I have no need or desire for these services nor do any of the people I know who surf so I have no idea how that might work for you

A surf guide is necessary for the beginners ...For the sake of security ,it is better to take surfing in nice whether.
safety is the best thing that we need to take care about..pleasant climate is best for surfing and early morning surfing is a best and it gives a positive energy to us.
For surfing it is better to choose less crowded beaches.
