Fun…if you’re planning a wave-cation or just want to second guess the choices. National Geographic looked beyond surf conditions to include - the town, surf schools, restaurants, and other recreation.

I would have picked Santa Cruz but I have a NorCal bias.:D What do you think?

Fun list....Queens NY, Rhode Island,Tel Aviv and St Barths should not be on the list. My first wife was from St. Barths, been there many times, is an island of 8,000 people and I never saw one surfboard or surfshop and can't ever remember a wave there at all. Not what I would call a world surf destination. New York is a world class city with surfing nearby; probably why it is listed. From what I hear about Santa Cruz, it should be on there....near total lack of Australian locales & South Africa (1 ea), anywhere Indo other than Bali and only one Hawaiian entry makes this a suspect list.....I get it though....US publication weights heavily with US destinations and then one each for worldwide countries. No Florida spots here either, North Carolina off the list, no Baja or Puerto Escondido, Peru or Chile and Tahiti is glaringly omitted. Maybe we should make our own list?

If I wanted to have a surfing vacation in Socal, I think I'd make Encinitas my jumping off point.

Great idea! I love the spots with natural beauty and (while I've never been) these look gorgeous.

I make no secret of it..... east coast six hours drive south of Sydney a little fickle and many many breaks on the drive south. .
Sand is not quite right at the moment. Lots of flat spells as swells not as they were a few years ago! Global warming!

The other end of the same beach, two distinct moods , even more fickle than the northern end.

Well Jaffa, if you want to show off....here is my 'local' (or at least my 'regular'). I assume a table was set up just next to the car park and in front of the toilet block to make it look a bit more glamorous!
