I'm a beginner and I want to take a trip during December/January to try and improve. I was thinking of going somewhere in southern California. Does anyone have any tips for specific places to go and ways to save money? Thanks

If money is an issue, I'd suggest pretty much anywhere besides SoCal, Hawaii or Japan.

Where are you living now?

"IMPROVE" on what ?
1) catching waves
2) paddling speed
3) Popping up
4) turning ( bottom turning )
5) Backside surfing
6) Airs ( there's beginner(s) that can do it )

If you're land locked, I would get a Carver skateboard ( or ones with a front rotating truck ). It will help you a lot.

because you are a beginner, I will suggest you try the Dog Paddle break. This is the southernmost break of three breaks in the San Onofre State Beach park located in California. This park is in northern San Diego county, just south of Orange County. There are many threads in this forum about San O. Search them. Or, go to Pebble Beach (PB) in the City of San Diego. There are a some threads in this forum about PB. Search them.

I don't know anything about Hawaii except it is expensive. If you have Hawaii flight money, why not head to Central America instead.....was talking with yet another person about Central America, this time Nicaragua, and they had great things to say about it.
