Best longboard waves Feb-April, cheap place to live, safe

Hi All,
I'm a novice to intermediate female surfer. I want to get out of the California rat race and crowds for three months. I'll be traveling alone and I hope to live very cheaply and barter/work for room and board when I'm not surfing. I'm a yoga instructor but I'd be happy to clean hotel rooms or bar tend.

Where is are there mellow waves, walking distance from a cool town with fun people where I can live cheaply?

Do you speak spanish? If yes then Mexico or Central America is a bus ride away. Look for tourist destinations that cater to foreign tourists; "spare" jobs in third world countries don't exist unless you have a special skill (yoga, fluent english)....working cheaply is a given as well. Daily workers at my job make less than 5 bucks a day for an 8 hour shift. Plus side is a little goes a long way; english schools are a place where you could get work...on a higher level would be international k-12 schools, but adult learning centres abound in Mexico and here as well, all would be interested in a native english speaker so long as you didn't expect much. Minus side is that at least for here (Indonesia) the noose is getting tighter for businesses that get caught with off the books foreigners working for them; massive fines are discouraging the practice (you aren't the only one who has thought of dropping out for a few months and surfing with piecemeal work to get by.....half of the bukit is doing just that). It's a get in where you fit in situation; the more savvy you are the better off you'll land, but worst case scenario just save some bucks and go to a remote area where your dollars will go a long way.....downside is that regardless of your personal situation or budget, as far as any local in any third world locale the world over is concerned, especially the further out into the countryside you venture, you are RICH and are expected to spend some of your riches on their goods and services if you wish to be part of the community.

I taught english in Mexico so that I could stay there for a time....never a mention of a working permit or visa but that was a long time ago and was in a fairly large population so I disappeared into the faces there......would be harder in a small village with the competition for jobs and $$$.... good luck!

Why not explore the Gulf Coast? Who knows what you'll find there? I'm sure it's a hell of a lot cheaper than California and the people there, in my experience, know how to tell a story.
