possible 4 months in Morocco. Questions about surf & crowds

Postby sailingdude » Thu Oct 20, 2016 8:27 pm

Hey guys,

I'm thinking about heading to Morocco from January to April (total time spent will be around six months or when the money runs out, but thinking I'll check out Spain and Portugal on my way up through europe to find a cheaper plane flight back to the states). Before I begin the question I just wanted to let you know that I have combed pretty extensively through the previous posts using the forum search function and I have gleaned as much information as I can before potentially writing a needless duplicate post.

To keep costs down and to add some positive stuff on my resume (19 year old over here who still plans/wants to go to college), I'm planning to try and work out some workaway type programs (preferably teaching english as I did this in Nica and had a blast). But Morocco is a big country and before I start contacting people and organizations I wanted to figure out the areas I should be looking into specifically first.

I'd pretty much call myself a beginning surfer, I've spent around three straight months surfing in Central America so I'm not terrible. But I'm pretty much a kook when things get real out in the water. The one thing that makes it really hard for me to enjoy surf is crowds. I'd rather surf a bad empty wave than a good crowded wave personally. I'm also not some adrenaline junkie who's all about size.

To be honest, I'm just looking for mellow, soft wave that'll stay open long enough for me to fool around in and get a solid wave count (I know don't ask for much lol :unuts: ). I figure this for sure exists somewhere in Morocco perhaps in some faraway saharan mirage but when I try to find out stuff online all I see is Taghazout which sounds like a f'ing nightmare. I've heard great things about essouira but the person had been there 10 years ago and wasn't that surf focused.

So is there a region that I should be looking to target (obviously I intend to soak up the culture and do stuff inland) but for living purposes finding a base of operations near a few breaks that are more towards my easily intimidated skill set would be best. The more northern areas are attractive as I'd like to find someone to keep working on my spanish but I'd also like to see if I can pick up french anyway so either way it's a win win. Anyway, any suggestions on Morocco in general would be much appreciated. I tend to try and get as cultural an experience so touristy surf camps are not really my thing (although they do every once in a while provide fun...distractions). I have no problem roughing it, hell I really would like to do some beach camping but from what I've seen this isn't Baja, and in Morocco this isn't that great of an idea albeit a highly appealing one. I also love trekking related activities so proximity to potential hikes and other sights are factored into what has now become a highly complicated equation.

Anyway sorry for this mountain of text (kids this what happens when you try to write a detailed post on 3 inch screen  )

PS: If you guys are hesitant about posting this stuff on the interwebs totally understand....any chance you can send me a pm and it'll be our secret (in all seriousness I will respect your privacy if you want to keep things on the down low)????
